How the three tracked markets compare

Countries, currencies and cryptocurrencies are ranked using different measures. The totals below are shown together only to provide scale — they are not a single asset ranking.

These measures describe different economic concepts and should not be interpreted as interchangeable values. A country is not “bigger” or “smaller” than a coin; only the measures can be placed next to each other, and only for scale.

Tracked market size

True scale. Bar lengths are directly proportional to the totals.

National wealth · 214 economies $869T

Assets minus liabilities, latest available estimates · 87.5% of the three totals added together

Money supply (M2) · 121 currencies $121T

Broad money of tracked issuing economies · 12.2% of the three totals added together

Market cap · 508 cryptocurrencies $2.9T

Price multiplied by circulating supply · 0.3% of the three totals added together

What each measure describes

National wealth — the estimated value of assets minus liabilities across tracked economies. A quantity held at a point in time.

Money supply (M2) — broad money across tracked currencies, converted to US dollars. Also held at a point in time, but it measures money rather than assets.

Crypto market cap — the current market value of tracked cryptocurrencies, which changes minute by minute.

Why there is no universal ranking
